Summary Explanation/Background

June 19, also known as Juneteenth, commemorates the date in 1865 when the Union Army informed enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, of their freedom from slavery and the end of the Civil War.  Juneteenth is recognized as a holiday in more than 45 states, and several states and local governments have recognized Juneteenth as a paid day of leave for their employees.

At its meeting on December 8, 2020, the Board discussed honoring the Juneteenth holiday by establishing it as a paid County holiday (with or without deferred implementation), or as a day for County-sponsored events of celebration and education, and approved proceeding to the public hearing with a proposed amendment to the Broward County Administrative Code to establish Juneteenth as a day of celebration and education.  The proposed amendment would, if approved, designate June 19 as Juneteenth Celebration Day to commemorate the end of slavery and celebrate freedom and equal rights.  The County would support the celebration by means of County-sponsored events and provide special programs and educational information about Juneteenth through its Libraries, Parks, and other Departments, Divisions, and Offices.
