Summary Explanation/Background

On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, announcing that, effective January 1, 1863, all persons held as slaves within any state then being in rebellion against the United States shall be "forever free." Over two years later, on June 19, 1865, the Union Army informed enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, of their freedom from slavery and the end of the Civil War. Juneteenth commemorates this event and celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, and therefore is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate freedom and equal rights.

This Resolution, if adopted, would urge The School Board of Broward County to increase educational efforts about Juneteenth so that its employees and students may learn more about the history and experiences relating to Juneteenth that have shaped the United States.
