Summary Explanation/Background

THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF ABOVE MOTIONS.

This item supports the Board's Value of "Cooperatively creating an efficient and accessible intermodal transportation network" and Goal to “Support the development, design and construction of sustainable, multi-modal transportation facilities throughout the County, to meet the demands of residents, travelers, and businesses.”

On August 16, 2011, Item 62B, the Board approved an agreement with the City of Tamarac for the City’s maintenance of 16 bus shelters and bus stop improvements constructed by the County within the City’s jurisdiction. The first amendment adds an additional 79 locations within the City for bus stop improvements to be installed by the County as part of the Broward County Bus Shelter and Bus Stop Improvement Program. The improvements will include 79 bus shelters, 80 benches, 80 trash receptacles, and 85 bike racks.

The Transportation Department (BCT) has and will continue to install bus shelters and/or associated amenities (benches, trash receptacles, energy efficient solar lighting, bike racks, etc.) at bus stop locations throughout the County but within the jurisdiction of the 31 municipalities. With the passage of the Penny for Transportation, the plan calls for the design and construction of 2,250 new bus shelters over 30 years. Under existing maintenance agreements, the cities assume responsibility for all maintenance and repairs of the bus stops, including the shelters and associated amenities constructed as detailed in their respective agreements.

BCT is requesting that the County Administrator be authorized to execute amendments to existing agreements, prepared and approved by the County Attorney’s office, authorizing the associated maintenance of any additional bus shelters and/or bus stop improvements designed and constructed by the County.
