Why Action is Necessary
Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from a criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes. Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are required to appropriate LETF funds.

Provides LETF funding in the amount of $125,761 to BSO to acquire DNA testing equipment for its Crime Lab.

Summary Explanation/Background
The Broward Sheriff's Office supports this LETF request for the Automate Robots DNA Unit for BSO's Crime Lab. The Automate Robots DNA equipment will increase the amount of DNA evidence the Crime Lab is able to process as well as allowing for expanding the sample types processed to include hair and bone samples, reducing the potential for contamination and the ability to be expanded to larger robots in the future. The Automate Robots will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Crime Lab DNA Unit in processing DNA for criminal investigations.
