A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF THE COOPERATIVE FOR ASSISTANCE AND RELIEF EVERYWHERE (“CARE”), AN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO FIGHTING POVERTY AND PROMOTING SOCIAL JUSTICE ACROSS THE GLOBE; AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

This item supports the Board Value, “Approaching human services collaboratively and compassionately, with special emphasis on the most vulnerable,” and the Board Goal, “Collaborate with public and private partners to find creative, equitable, and responsible solutions to systemic community problems.”
According to demographic data compiled by the Broward County Planning and Development Management Division, 14% of Broward County residents live below the poverty line, including more than 19% of children under age 18 in Broward County.
The Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (“CARE”) is an international humanitarian organization that, for more than 75 years, has been dedicated to fighting poverty and promoting social justice around the globe and across the United States. The mission statement of CARE is “We seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and all people live with dignity and security.”
CARE has implemented creative solutions to help provide critical food services to vulnerable communities, such as partnering with gig economy platforms including TaskRabbit, Lyft, and DoorDash. CARE has also launched a number of programs, such as community lending circles and savings and loan associations, aimed at providing financial stability and economic opportunity to vulnerable communities.
The proposed Resolution, if adopted, would recognize CARE for its work to fight poverty and support social justice.
