Summary Explanation/Background

This item supports the Board’s Value of “Ensuring economic opportunities for Broward’s diverse population and businesses.”

Broward County is one of the most diverse regions in the country, with a large population of a wide variety of minority groups that recognize and value diversity in race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation.  Broward County has been at the forefront of protecting the rights of minority communities, including by enacting one of the first local Ordinances requiring equal benefits for registered domestic partnerships, mandating nondiscrimination as a standard provision in County contracts, and enforcing equal employment opportunity policies regarding hiring.

Broward County is committed to providing all businesses fair and equal opportunities to compete for County contracts. The proposed Resolution welcomes and encourages all businesses, including minority-owned businesses, to participate fully in the Broward County business community, take advantage of County-sponsored training programs to learn about the County procurement process, and compete for County contracts when eligible.

The proposed Resolution, if adopted, would reaffirm the Board’s support for the full participation of minority-owned businesses in all aspects of Broward County’s business community and would express the Board’s continued support for fair and equal opportunity for all businesses to compete for Broward County contracts.
