Summary Explanation/Background
The County has experienced a rise in filings of fraudulent deeds, mortgages, and other property-related documents in the Official Records of Broward County. These false documents can interfere with residents' property rights by, for example, purporting to transfer a home to a third party. A program recently initiated by the Broward County Property Appraiser allows residents to register to receive an alert if the Property Appraiser receives a document transferring the ownership of their property. The County's Records, Taxes and Treasury Division is planning a similar program to allow interested parties to register to receive notices of filings regarding a particular property.

This item, if approved, would direct County staff to analyze whether additional protections can be implemented and, if so, to recommend an appropriate program, including any appropriate amendments of the Broward County Code of Ordinances or Administrative Code, for future consideration by the Board.
