Summary Explanation/Background
This past week marked an escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas, precipitated by the indiscriminate firing by Hamas and other Gaza-based terrorist groups of thousands of rockets into the State of Israel, resulting in civilian deaths and other casualties. Israel, acting well within its rights as a sovereign nation, has responded to these attacks through aerial counterattacks targeting structures used in connection with the launching of rockets into Israel. Every sovereign nation, including Israel, has the right to defend its residents from attacks of the nature we are currently witnessing.

This tragic loss of civilian life can be avoided only if Hamas and aligned terrorist groups cease firing rockets into Israel.

This item, if approved, would adopt the proposed Resolution strongly supporting the sovereignty of the State of Israel, recognizing the right of all sovereign entities to self-defense and protection of their residents, and urging a prompt cessation of the current fighting.

This item was submitted to County Administration after the Thursday, May 13 deadline, to enable continued monitoring of events and revised drafting of the Resolution. Because of the level of daily casualties, this item cannot await the County's June 1, 2021, agenda.
