Summary Explanation/Background
THE FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND THE RISK MANAGEMENT DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

On February 21, 2020, a Highway Construction and Engineering truck was traveling east on Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. It is alleged that the County's truck changed lanes and into the path of the Claimant's vehicle, which was traveling in the left through lane with the right of way. The Claimant's vehicle sustained heavy damage after flipping over on its right side.

The Claimant sustained serious injuries, including traumatic brain injury, and was diagnosed with chronic post concussive syndrome and post traumatic headaches. The medical bills total $60,951 to date and are expected to rise with continued treatment. The attorney's bodily injury demand is for $200,000.

A tentative settlement agreement, pending Board approval and conditioned on a release of the County from any further obligations, was reached in the total amount of $100,000.
The original demand from the Claimant's Counsel was $200,000.

Please note that the Office of the County Attorney and the County Administrator have concurred with the settlement.
