Allows for continued services provided by the Alliance and allows for adequate time to negotiate a new agreement.

Is this Action Goal Related

Yes

Previous Action Taken

The Board approved the current agreement with the Alliance on September 27, 2016 (Item 40).

Summary Explanation/Background

THE OFFICE OF ECONOMIC AND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT (OESBD) RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

This item supports the Board’s Goal to “Attract and retain all types of business, especially high-wage industries that offer employee benefits, through partnerships with the Alliance, chambers of commerce, colleges and universities, CareerSource, and any other available avenues.”

The County entered into a Public/Private Economic Development Partnership Agreement with The Broward Alliance, Inc., d/b/a Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance (the “Alliance”), for services relating to implementation of strategies for economic growth, job creation, and expansion of local tax base through attraction of new capital investment. This Agreement was for a term of five years and is set to expire on September 30, 2021. The agreement permits the Alliance to assist the County in implementing and promoting its economic development strategy to carry out the purposes expressed in the Broward County Job Growth/Economic Development Incentives Act. OESBD submitted a memo to the Board dated April 12, 2021, in which OESBD notified the Board of its intent to conclude negotiations with the Alliance prior to the Agreement’s expiration date but would request an extension if negotiations were not timely completed (Exhibit 1).

If this item is approved, the County Administrator will be able to approve and execute an amendment extending the agreement on a month-to-month basis for up to three months, allowing OESBD to complete negotiations with the Alliance for a new five-year agreement. The proposed month-to-month extension will be under the same rates, terms, and conditions contained in the Agreement.
