Summary Explanation/Background
Temporary Protected Status ("TPS") may be granted to persons residing in the United States who are nationals of countries enduring conditions that temporarily prevent them from returning safely or, in certain circumstances, where countries are unable to adequately handle the return of their nationals.

It is estimated that more than 320,000 Venezuelan nationals, most of whom live in the State of Florida, qualify for TPS. On August 3, 2021, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas extended TPS for Venezuelans through September 9, 2022. However, gaining lawful immigration status in the United States is a lengthy and arduous process that is estimated to take about four years for the average Venezuelan national. Venezuelan nationals are in need of a remedy to fill the gap of time between the expiration of their TPS and the time necessary to complete the legal immigration process.

The proposed Resolution, if adopted, would urge President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., to grant TPS protection for Venezuelan nationals for an extended period to provide those individuals additional time to go through the necessary legal process...
