Summary Explanation/Background
THE OFFICE OF ECONOMIC AND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION
The above motion supports the Board’s Value of “Ensuring economic opportunities for Broward’s diverse population and businesses” and the Board’s Goal to “Attract and retain all types of business, especially high wage industries that offer employee benefits, through partnerships with the Alliance, chambers of commerce, colleges and universities, CareerSource, and any other available avenues.”
On November 18, 2014, the Board recommended Project Boost for approval as a qualified applicant for participation in the State of Florida Qualified Targeted Industry Tax Refund Program (“QTI”). In light of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their business operations, Project Boost consulted with the Department of Economic Opportunity regarding exercising an option to extend the company’s job creation schedule by one year. Board approval is required to effectuate the one-year extension. The Office of Economic and Small Business Development requests that the Board approve the extension of the job creation schedule provided that there is no increase in the amount of local financial support and no decrease in the total number of jobs to be created.
