Summary Explanation/Background

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (also known as the Youth Risk Behavior Survey) ("YRBSS") is a Statewide, school-based confidential survey of Florida's public school students that has been administered since 1991 to monitor priority health-risk behaviors that contribute substantially to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth, which problems often continue in adulthood. The Florida Department of Education has recently withdrawn its participation in the YRBSS.  In recognition of the vital role the YRBSS plays in monitoring the health of Florida's youth, the proposed Resolution urges Governor DeSantis, the Florida Department of Education, and the State Board of Education to reinstate administration of the YRBSS.

This item was considered by the Board on May 10, 2022, and it passed by a vote of 4 - 1. However, the Board's procedural rules require five affirmative votes to pass substantive items including resolutions. Thus, the item was tabled for subsequent consideration by the Board.
