Summary Explanation/Background
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL.
This item supports the Board of County Commissioners' Value of "cooperatively delivering an efficient and accessible regional intermodal transportation network" with the Goal of supporting "the development, design and construction of sustainable, multi-modal transportation facilities throughout the County, to meet the demands of residents, travelers and businesses."
On November 5, 2019 (Item No. 7), the Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution No. 2019-485 supporting the City of Oakland Park’s Complete Streets and Local Initiatives Program grant application to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements along NW 21st Avenue from Oakland Park Boulevard to NW 26th Street (Exhibit 2).
Since then, the City of Oakland Park, along with the Cities of Fort Lauderdale and Tamarac, have requested to extend the project limits to improve NW 21st Avenue from Commercial Boulevard to NW 26th Street. NW 21st Avenue is a two-lane County road within the three cities. The MPO has programmed this project under its currently adopted Fiscal Year 23 - Fiscal Year 27 Transportation Improvement Program using federal funds. FDOT will be responsible for project design, construction and construction administration. Broward County will continue to maintain or coordinate the maintenance of the road after construction of the proposed improvements. The project will be implemented with no change in the number of vehicle travel lanes.
In order to move the project forward towards implementation, the MPO and FDOT require a resolution showing support from the Board of County Commissioners. Staff from the County’s Complete Streets Team have reviewed the proposed improvements and support the implementation of the project. Approval of this Resolution (Exhibit 1) will formally affirm the County’s support for the project.
The Resolution has been reviewed and approved as to form by the Office of the County Attorney,
