Summary Explanation/Background
THE LIBRARIES DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Board Values by ensuring economic opportunities for Broward’s diverse population and businesses.
On December 14, 1999 (Agenda Item 80), the Board of County Commissioners (Board) approved an Agreement with NSU for the design, construction, and operation of a joint-use library and parking garage. The agreement includes certain obligations of NSU and the County regarding a build-out of the library’s fifth floor.
The Board approved the Tenth Amendment to the Agreement for the Innovation Center on June 11, 2019 (Item No. 79), which provided for the development of the Innovation Center, and each party’s cash contributions in the amount of $5,000,000 and respective obligations.
This Modification of the Tenth Amendment (Exhibit 1) provides for the County and NSU to each contribute an additional $1,750,000, for a total of $13,500,000 for the Innovation Center. The County’s contribution detailed in Exhibit 2 is solely for the capital construction costs and the increased funding is necessary due to NSU’s estimated costs on a 33,000 square-foot Center rather than the actual 54,000 square feet (Exhibit 3).
The Innovation Center will further the County's small business initiatives by providing programming that features industry experts and mentorship, networking opportunities, training for small business and entrepreneurs, programs for teens and adults, and providing access to seed investors and venture capitalists.
The Modification has been reviewed and approved by the Office of the County Attorney.
