Summary Explanation/Background
This item proposes that the Board of County Commissioners (“Board”) consider naming the community room at the Broward Addiction Recovery Center, located at 325 SW 28th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33315 (“Community Room”), as “The Rocky Rodriguez Community Room” in honor of former President of the Broward County Substance Abuse Advisory Board (“SAAB”), Rocky Rodriguez.
Prior to his death, Mr. Rodriguez championed helping individuals with substance use disorders and advocated for funding and program initiatives for substance use disorder treatment and mental health programs locally, regionally, and nationally. During Mr. Rodriguez’s 34-year tenure as a member of the SAAB, of which he served 18 years as the board’s President, Mr. Rodriguez was instrumental in raising funds, support, and awareness for the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (“BARC”), as well as for treatment and support services for persons suffering from substance use disorders. Notably, Mr. Rodriguez was influential in the successful opening of BARC’s main campus in Fort Lauderdale.
Section 18.43 of the Broward County Administrative Code (“Administrative Code”) establishes the Board’s policies for naming property, buildings, structures, or facilities.
This item (1) provides notice that the proposed designation of the Community Room will be on a future Board agenda, as is required in Section 18.43(h) of the Administrative Code, and (2) directs the County Administrator to solicit community input from three local municipalities, homeowners’ associations, or other appropriate community groups, as required under Section 18.43(i) of the Administrative Code.
Through an August 30, 2022, letter to the Board, the SAAB has shown its support for the naming of the Community Room in honor of Rocky Rodriguez (Exhibit 1).
