On September 8, 2022, at the regular commission meeting of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, staff was directed to prepare a report outlining parameters and costs for wastewater testing for disease causing agents.
Summary Explanation/Background
During the September 8, 2022, Broward County Commissioner meeting, the Board directed staff to bring back a report outlining parameters and costs for wastewater testing for disease causing agents.
Accordingly, staff researched the details of various wastewater surveillance efforts, programs, and monitoring networks being implemented within and outside of the state of Florida. Research included consultation with academic service providers; communications with national, state and local centers for disease control and public health; and consultation with local governments and wastewater service providers.
This item includes a summary of this research and presents four potential options for the Board’s consideration. Success hinges on a public health entity’s participation, as any data we might acquire would need their cooperation for analysis and implementation of any appropriate protective measures.
