A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, NAMING COURTROOM 15150, LOCATED AT THE BROWARD COUNTY JUDICIAL COMPLEX, IN HONOR OF MICHAEL MOSKOWITZ AS “THE MICHAEL MOSKOWITZ COURTROOM”; DIRECTING THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR TO TAKE ALL ACTIONS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE NAMING OF THE COURTROOM; AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

Summary Explanation/Background
This item proposes that the Board of County Commissioners (“Board”) name Courtroom 15150 at the Main Courthouse, located at 201 S.E. Sixth Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301 (“Courtroom”), in honor of Michael Moskowitz.
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Michael Moskowitz served the Broward County community for decades as a lawyer, lobbyist, philanthropist, and community leader. Mr. Moskowitz frequently walked the halls of the Broward County Governmental Center, armed with a smile, a story, and a mission. He lobbied before governmental bodies and regulatory authorities on behalf of both local and national clients. He had also represented Broward County in significant litigation. A founder and managing partner of the Fort Lauderdale law firm Moskowitz Mandell Salim & Simowitz, his law practice focused on local government law, land use, complex litigation, and real estate. He and his firm litigated many high-profile cases in the Main Courthouse.
Section 18.43 of the Broward County Administrative Code (“Administrative Code”) establishes the Board’s policies for naming property, buildings, structures, or facilities.
On October 11, 2022 (Agenda Item No. 61), the Board provided notice on the record that it would consider a proposed Resolution naming the Courtroom in honor of Michael Moskowitz on November 15, 2022, as required under Section 18.43(h) of the Administrative Code. Further, the Board directed the County Administrator to solicit the input of at least three local municipalities, homeowners’ associations, or other appropriate community groups of the Board’s proposal to designate the Courtroom in honor of Michael Moskowitz. Correspondence received by the County Administrator from such groups is included as Exhibit 2.
This item would adopt a Resolution designating the Courtroom as “The Michael Moskowitz Courtroom” in honor of Michael Moskowitz, and would direct the County Administrator to take all budgetary and other actions necessary to effectuate the naming of the Courtroom.
