Why Action is Necessary

Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are required to appropriate LETF funds.

Provides LETF funding in the amount of $65,341 for purchase of a drone and speed trailer for use by the Wilton Manors Police Department.

Summary Explanation/Background

The Broward Sheriff's Office supports this LETF request for the purchase of a Drone and Speed Trailer to be used by the Wilton Manors Police Department. The drone will be used to assist in several different law enforcement operations. to include crowd control and post natural disaster damage assessments. The speed trailer will be used during proactive traffic enforcement and as a deterrent in areas where excessive vehicle speeds are a concern. All data from the use of the drone and speed trailer will link directly to the BSO Real Time Crime Center for law enforcement monitoring. The federal LETF funds used for the purpose are funds that were earned in federal task force operations and represent a portion of the City of Wilton Manors' share of the funds that are maintained by BSO as required by Federal Equitable Sharing Rules.

According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of May 17, 2023, is $5,972,319 in the local account ($4,170,796 of which is unrestricted) and $5,875,566 in the federal account ($3,392,656 of which is unrestricted). This action will utilize $65,341 in unrestricted federal funds.
