Summary Explanation/Background
On April 29, 2020, Plaintiff Alphonso Kinsey was driving a vehicle eastbound on NW 19th Street in Fort Lauderdale when he was rear-ended by a Broward County Traffic Engineering Division truck. The complaint alleges that the County driver failed to use due care, which resulted in a collision and severe injuries to the Plaintiff. The Plaintiff has undergone substantial medical treatment after the incident, including surgery. His medical expenses, to date, are $64,910.54.
The Plaintiff has agreed to release Broward County from all claims arising from the incident in exchange for $65,000.00, which includes costs and attorneys’ fees, subject to Board approval.
The Risk Management Division and Traffic Engineering Division recommend approval of this settlement.

The source of funds is the County’s general liability self-insurance fund. Agencies of the County pay annual premiums into the fund based upon the number of their employees and five-year claims history.
