Summary Explanation/Background
At the Commission Meeting on May 23, 2023 (Item No. 68), the Board directed the County Administrator to develop a plan to test the potable water supply at the two Broward County Water Treatment Plants (WTP 1A located in Lauderdale Lakes and WTP 2A in Pompano Beach) for PFAS and other contaminants and present the plan at the June 13, 2023 Commission Meeting.
Staff has prepared the attached briefing sheet on PFAS (Exhibit 1) and a proposed framework for planning efforts to test and study PFAS in the County's public water supply (Exhibit 2). The plan includes engaging a consultant to review the results of the water testing and study any potential treatment options, future testing, and costs consistent with proposed PFAS limits in the final rules issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which are expected to be issued by the end of December 2023.
